Why the numbers diverge so widely
Neighbourhood. A furnished apartment in Villa Morra, Carmelitas or Los Laureles — central Asunción districts where most of the expatriate rental supply sits — costs considerably more than the city average, particularly when it includes services such as weekly cleaning or 24-hour security.
City. Asunción is not the only reference point. Encarnación, Ciudad del Este and Villarrica have far lower cost structures — in Villarrica, for example, two- to three-bedroom houses rent in the US$250 to 500 a month range.
What the standard of living includes. A survey that adds up only a modest rent and a basic grocery shop lands on much lower figures than one including full private health cover, domestic help, eating out, and a lifestyle closer to what an urban professional would maintain in any capital.
